When you think of psychology, an image of Sigmund Freud in his white coat analysing a client’s dreams might come to mind. But today, psychology newcastle is not only a fascinating academic discipline, it’s also a vital professional practice.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist?
A career in psychology can be highly rewarding, whether you work in a clinical role as a psychologist (with further study) or as a practitioner in other sectors such as health, education and the police. You can also use the knowledge and skills you acquire to work as a health care worker, marketing analyst, human resource manager or career counsellor, or you may choose to go on and do a PhD.
Our three-year Psychology BSc Honours degree allows you to shape your study with our optional modules. You’ll also have the opportunity to take a placement year in the second or third stage of your programme, providing an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the workplace.
As well as developing a range of graduate skills known as psychological literacy, you’ll develop an understanding of the impact of society and culture on behaviour, individual differences, mental illness and human development. You’ll also learn how to carry out psychological research, and how to assess and analyse data.
All first-year students are assigned a personal tutor who will support you throughout your degree, helping with both academic and non-academic issues. You’ll be taught in the School’s Dame Margaret Barbour Building, located just 10 minutes from Newcastle city centre. You’ll also have access to the Psychology Biomedical Science and HMRI research labs, the University of Newcastle psychology community clinic and external professional agencies.
