The latest update to iOS introduced Live Activities, which offer a way for apps to display real-time information in a persistent notification bubble on your Lock screen or Dynamic Island (on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max). This feature is ideal for following sports scores as it lets you stay in the know without having to unlock your phone or open an app.

Live Activity is available for the MLB app and select third-party sports apps, and will no doubt continue to expand as more developers take advantage of it. To use this feature, you’ll need to have a sports app installed that offers push notifications. The apps that support live sports score notifications include the NBC Sports, ESPN, and Fox Sports apps, as well as the MLB, NBA, NFL, and Premier League apps for users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, UK, Brazil, Mexico, and Japan.
Apple is also leaning into live sports with its new Apple Sports app, which displays real-time scores and stats in a single, customizable view. It’s available now in the U.S. and includes scores from MLS soccer, the NBA, NHL, and NCAA basketball, and the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 top-flight soccer leagues. Apple says the app will update “faster than your TV” because most live sports games are broadcast with a delay.
