Thank you for your interest in adopting a worthy animal from Save Our Strays Fort Bend.  Our goal is to rescue as many homeless cats and dogs as possible from local area shelters and place them into stable, loving and responsible homes.

Adoption Requirements

To adopt an animal from our organization you must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have a legal form of identification (driver’s license or state ID).
  • Be allowed to have a pet of the breed and size you've selected where you currently live.
  • Be able to spend the time and resources necessary to provide the training, medical treatment and proper care for your pet.
  • Complete an adoption application and provide any further details needed to determine your application status.
  • Have your application approved by one of our lead volunteers.
  • Be able to pay our per pet adoption fee and be willing to sign our adoption contract.

Important Considerations

Our adoptions are NOT conducted on a "first-come, first served" basis.  All prospective adoptive families are screened carefully to help ensure an ideal fit for our cats and dogs.

Before you start to review our adoptable animals, please take some time to identify the characteristics of the animal that are important to you.  You should know what personality traits, activity level and healthcare needs will be compatible with you and your family's needs.  For example:

  • Do you want a cat that will bond strongly to you and want to be by your side all day long OR do you prefer a cat that is more independent, only seeking your attention a few times a day?
  • Do you want a dog that can accompany you on long runs or one that will be happy to sit on your porch and keep you company?
  • If you're thinking of adopting a long-haired dog, can you afford to pay for regular grooming?  Do you understand that certain dog breeds are prone to a higher incidence of health problems?
  • If you are considering adopting a puppy or kitten, do you have the time and energy to train them (they will require a lot of time)?  Can you "baby-proof" your house?  Are you willing to deal with potty accidents?

As you browse through our adoptable animals, we encourage you to seek animals with the personality traits, activity level and healthcare needs that match your personal and family circumstances. Just because an animal is cute or cuddly does not mean it will fit into your family; compatibility is the key.

While we endeavor to supply as much useful information about our adoptable animals as possible, please keep in mind that the majority of them are strays so we usually have very limited information.  We cannot guarantee the age or prior health history of most of our rescue animals and can only provide an approximation of age according to our veterinarian.

To ensure we are not contributing to pet overpopulation, we will only adopt out animals that have already been spayed or neutered.

Please see the Cat Adoptions or Dog Adoptions pages for details on our adoption fees and processes.
